Western International Mahjong: Elegant, Strategic, Enduring

ATF Mahjongg bridges the tactical depth of traditional Mahjong with clear, modern Western gameplay. Requiring minimum point and double thresholds, it eliminates luck-driven quick wins and rewards thoughtful long-term strategy.

THE VICTORY THRESHOLD

4 Sets + 1 Pair & The Double Requirement

To declare Mahjong in ATF Western International play, a completed hand must consist of 4 melded sets (Pungs or Kongs) plus 1 Pair (14 tiles total), AND must achieve at least 3 doubles and a minimum base total of 100 points. This standard guarantees that every declared winning hand reflects authentic tactical depth.

≥ 3 Doubles
and ≥ 100 Points to Win

The Standard 148-Tile Set

ATF Mahjongg utilizes 148 tiles organized into suits, honors, bonus tiles, and jokers.

108 Suit Tiles

Three distinct suits numbered 1 through 9, with 4 copies of each tile:

  • Bamboos (Bams): 36 tiles
  • Dots (Circles): 36 tiles
  • Characters (Craks): 36 tiles

28 Honor Tiles

Winds and Dragons used to create valuable doubling combinations:

  • Four Winds: East, South, West, North (16 tiles)
  • Three Dragons: Red, Green, White (12 tiles)

8 Bonus Tiles

Special bonus tiles that grant instant replacement draws and bonus points:

  • 4 Flowers: Plum, Orchid, Chrysanthemum, Bamboo
  • 4 Seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter

4 Wild Jokers

Flexible wild tiles that can complete Pungs, Kongs, or Pairs:

  • Can substitute in Pungs or Kongs
  • Subject to table exchange rules when tile is drawn

The Four Hand Families

Rather than memorizing arbitrary lines on an annual paper card, ATF players construct hands belonging to four logical families:

1. Suit Purity Hands

Hands built exclusively in one suit (Clean / Pure Hand, granting major doubles) or a single suit combined strictly with Honor tiles (Half-Flush / Semi-Clean Hand). These hands teach board discipline and discard reading.

2. All-Pung Combinations

Hands composed entirely of triplets (Pungs) and quads (Kongs) with no runs (Chows). All-Pung hands naturally accumulate high base points and double values, creating formidable table presence.

3. Honor & Terminal Hands

Hands emphasizing Winds (prevailing table wind and seat wind), Dragons, and terminal tiles (1s and 9s). Capturing matching honor Pungs generates immediate doubles toward the 3-double threshold.

4. Special & Rare Patterns

Exclusive tournament-class hands such as Heavenly Hands, Earthly Hands, and all-pair constellations that award maximum doubles and thrilling table moments.
